4 Mapping Workflows for Business Intelligence - Geospatial Analytics to find Answers from Complex Datasets

Updated: Aug 29

Just as 3D technology revolutionized the movie-watching experience, geospatial analytics through advanced mapping technology (known as Geographic Information System or GIS in industry parlance) has added a whole new dimension in terms of our capability to extract valuable insights from data. Technically speaking, one can now perform 'spatial, statistical, predictive & link analysis' all on a dynamic Location Intelligence platform.

In this article, through four unique video-based Workflows, you will see how an advanced variant of this mapping technology aids in solving pressing problem statements by delivering powerful location analytics-based insights. Once you understand the concept-at-work, you'll be able to think of multiple ways you can leverage this technology for the organization / industry you operate in.

Listed below are the Section hyperlinks of the workflows covered in this article:

1. Studying Growth Patterns in Real Estate

In this case, you'll see a workflow on how an analyst is able to study existing real estate activity in a district and understand the historical growth patterns. He will then proceed to determine the root cause behind the construction growth (using additional non-spatial dataset) and make predictive recommendations as to where future construction activity would be expected to rise.

The interesting aspect about this case is that the workflow is easy to understand and applicable to multiple types of projects and situations.

2. Route Analysis to prevent Accidents

In this case, you'll see a workflow on how a logistics analyst attacks the problem of rising accidents involving cyclists in a bustling city by studying the pattern of collisions. Once the analyst discovers the underlying factors, he is able to give meaningful recommendations to the city board on ways to reduce the accident rates.

The hallmark of this case is how the project owner has an inspiring vision - the vision of the city board is to have zero fatal accidents - and how one can leverage technology to influence a positive safety outcome thereby progressing towards fulfilling the vision.

3. Detecting Anomalies from Medical Prescription Records

In this case, you'll see the workings of an analyst who wants to investigate whether doctors are over-prescribing medicinal drugs for malicious purposes (drug-trafficking).

The beauty about this case is how a complex problem is broken down into smaller chunks which makes it easier to tackle. The workflow is designed to investigate one chunk at first - subsequently the model is replicated to detect anomalies for another chunk. In this way, the scale of the problem becomes manageable and the comparison is apple-to-apple and the eventual insights are truly remarkable.

4. Studying Differences in Mortality Rate based on Ethnicity and other Geospatial Analytics

In this case, a healthcare analyst wants to verify a newspaper's claim that there there is an inherent bias in the healthcare system w.r.t. ethnicity of the patients - that Black women more susceptible to dying from breast cancer than White women. If true, the analyst will identify the locations where this bias is most prevalent (using scientific methodology) so that he can recommend the government to improve the healthcare facilities for black women in those areas.

While this is a case with region-specific social undertones, the broader concept-at-work is that one can use this technology to study Cause & Effect relationships. For example, one can use this workflow to determine how two kinds of target segments / audience profiles react to the same advertising campaign.
