Just as 3D projection technology transformed the movie-watching experience, Geospatial Analytics—powered by modern Geographic Information System (GIS)—has added an entirely new dimension to how we derive insights from location-based datasets. Technically speaking, we can now perform Spatial, Statistical, Predictive & Link analysis on a single, dynamic geospatial platform.

In this post, through four unique video workflows, you will see how a specialized module within GIS helps address complex problem statements by delivering sharper Location Intelligence and uncovering deep insights. Once you grasp the concept at work, you’ll be able to imagine numerous scenarios where this technology can be applied to great effect.

1. Studying Growth Patterns in Real Estate

In this workflow, you’ll see how an Analyst examines ongoing real estate development projects within a district and interprets historical construction activity. He then identifies the root cause behind a recent infrastructure boom and makes predictive assessments about which regions are likely to experience increased construction activity in the future.

Isn’t this workflow applicable to multiple types of projects and situations?

2. Route Analysis to Prevent Accidents

In this workflow, you’ll see how a Logistics Analyst tackles the problem of rising cyclist accidents in a bustling city by studying incident records and uncovering the underlying patterns. He is then able to provide meaningful recommendations to the City Board on ways to reduce accident rates.

A standout aspect of this case is the inspiring vision set by the Project Owner—the City Board—whose goal is zero fatal accidents. The case highlights how geospatial technology can be leveraged to drive positive change and accelerate progress toward such an ambitious target.

3. Detecting Anomalies from Medical Prescription Records

In this workflow, an Analyst investigates medical prescription records to determine whether certain doctors are over-prescribing drugs for illegal purposes (e.g., trafficking). The charm of this case lies in how a complex, large-scale problem is broken down into smaller, manageable fragments, allowing the Analyst to understand the data more effectively.

The workflow begins by examining only a subset of the available information. Once the anomaly-detection model is validated, it is replicated across other subsets. This approach keeps the challenge manageable, supports meaningful comparison, and leads to remarkable insights.

4. Studying Differences in Mortality Rate Based on Ethnicity

In this workflow, a Healthcare Analyst investigates a newspaper’s claim that the prevailing healthcare system exhibits inherent bias based on patient ethnicity—specifically, that Black women are more likely to die from breast cancer than White women. If the claim is validated using a structured scientific approach, the Analyst proceeds to identify the regions where this disparity is most prominent, so these findings can be presented to local governing bodies for targeted intervention.

Although this case carries important social implications, the broader concept at work is the use of geospatial technology to study cause-and-effect relationships. The same analytical workflow, for instance, could be used to understand how two different audience groups respond to the same advertising campaign.
