My recent post on LinkedIn was on these lines-

The beauty of Mapping technology today is that it can be integrated seamlessly with advanced computing systems to develop truly clever solutions. In some cases, Mapping technology plays the role of the protagonist; in others, it assumes a supporting role. What I particularly love about this field is that the user retains complete creative freedom in deciding how to deploy Mapping technology to achieve a specific objective.

The context behind this thought is a powerful TED Talk on how to mitigate a disturbing phenomenon—human stampedes.

When the objective carries dominant geospatial undertones—such as Precision Agriculture, Solar Siting, Transportation Network Design or AEC projectsMapping/GIS technology plays a central role. However, there are so many workflows where GIS forms just one component of a broader solution that combines multiple computing technologies and hardware.

In the stampede-mitigation example, the sensor mat (hardware) was a critical foundation. GIS was then integrated on top of this base to process, analyse, and visualize the movement data of worshippers at the Nashik Kumbh Mela. The real question for customers often becomes: Which technology or hardware should form the foundation, and what should be layered on top of it? It’s very much like choosing the base of a pizza before deciding the toppings.

Geographic Information System (GIS) is a robust and versatile platform that often makes for an excellent technology foundation. It can generate and display a single, unified operating view for an entire organisation.

Think of GIS as a Universal Travel Adapter—a technology with plug-and-play properties. It can integrate with a wide range of hardware and systems such as IoT, drones, sensors, ERP platforms, CAD software, AI, blockchain, deep learning, big data and AR. Our GIS technology partner, Esri, even established an R&D lab in New Delhi earlier this year to develop innovative, industry-specific solutions by combining the latest advances in data science, deep learning, and artificial intelligence with GIS.
