4 Cases: Derive Powerful Insights using Mapping Technology

Updated: Jul 1, 2021

Just as 3D technology revolutionized the movie watching experience, mapping technology has added a whole new dimension in terms of our capability to extract valuable insights from data. Technically speaking, one can now perform 'spatial, statistical, predictive and link analysis' all on one dynamic and easy-to-use platform.

Through four unique case videos in this article, you will see a step-by-step, workflow based approach to solving business problems using the latest in mapping technology. Once you understand the concept at work here (irrespective of the industry), you'll be able to think of multiple ways you can leverage this technology for your organization.

Let's have a look-

(The videos are best viewed on PC or on Landscape mode in Mobile Phone. You can reduce / increase the play speed as per your viewing habits.)

1. Deriving Insights from Mapping - Growth Patterns in Real Estate

In this case, you'll see a workflow of how an analyst is able to study existing real estate activity in one district and understand the historical growth patterns. He will then proceed to determine the root cause behind the construction growth (using additional non-spatial data-set) and make predictive recommendations as to where future construction activity is expected to rise.

The interesting aspect about this case is that the workflow is easy to understand and applicable to multiple types of business settings.

2. Deriving Insights from Mapping - Route Analysis for Logistics

In this case, you'll see a workflow of how a logistics analyst attacks the problem of rising accidents involving cyclists in a bustling city by studying the pattern of collision incidents. Once he discovers underlying factors, he is able to give meaningful recommendations to the city board on ways to reduce the accident rates.

The hallmark of this case is how the project owner has an inspiring vision (The vision of the city board is to have zero fatal accidents) and how one can leverage technology to influence positive outcome thereby progressing towards fulfilling that vision.

3. Deriving Insights from Mapping - Anomaly (Fraud) Detection for Pharma

In this case, you'll see the workings of an analyst who wants to investigate whether doctors are over-prescribing medicinal drugs for malicious (drug trafficking) purposes.

The beauty about this case is how a large, complex problem is broken down into simpler parts. The workflow is designed to investigate one part at first - the model is then replicated to detect deviations for another part. In this way, the scale of the problem becomes manageable, the comparison is like-for-like and the eventual insights are truly remarkable.

4. Deriving Insights from Mapping - Mortality Rate Differences by Ethnicity

In this case, a healthcare analyst wants to verify a newspaper claim which states that there there is an inherent bias in the healthcare system w.r.t. ethnicity of the patients - that Black women more susceptible to dying from breast cancer than White women. If true, the analyst will identify the locations where this bias is most prevalent (using scientific methodology) so that he can recommend the government to improve the healthcare facilities for black women in those areas.

While this is a case with region specific social undertones, the broader concept at work is that one can use this technology to study Cause & Effect relationships. For example, one can use this workflow to determine how two kinds of target segments / audience profiles react to the same advertising campaign.

Are you impressed by the technology potential? Would you like to see how it can be used to good effect at your organization?
